Judge at the Court of Justice of the European Communities

Professor Krateros Ioannou was born in Thessaloniki. He was a graduate of (1959) and held a Ph.D. (1971) from the School of Law of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He was Adjunct Professor (1974-1976) and Professor of Public International Law at the School of Law of the Democritus University of Thrace (1977-1999), and Judge at the Court of Justice of the European Communities (1997-1999). He served as Dean of the Thrace School of Law (1984-1986, 1987-1991) and Vice-Chancellor of the University (1988-1991). Moreover, he was visiting Professor of International and European Law at the Ohio State University and Capital University, Columbus, Ohio. He was a member of the Thessaloniki Bar and Director of the Centre of International and European Economic Law in Thessaloniki (1993-1997).

 

He participated as expert and legal advisor for the Permanent Mission of Greece at the UN in the General Assembly Annual sessions, various UN committees and conferences. He was also a member of the OSCE Conflict Prevention and Resolution Mechanism and the OSCE Tribunal. Upon his initiative, the Thrace School of Law has included European Community Law (now EU Law) as a compulsory subject in its curriculum since 1977. Professor Ioannou inspired many of his students to specialize in Public International Law. He was author of books [among which, Problems of Enforcement of ICJ Judgments (1971), Introduction to the International Justice (1983) (co-authored with Professor Stelios Perrakis) and Law of the Sea (1997) (co-authored with Dr. Anastasia Strati)] and numerous articles on International and European law.
